The Nokia Communicator was one of the original smartphones, known for a usable full QWERTY keyboard, clamshell form factor, large internal screen and a usable external one.

At Nokia World, Nokia today announced the new E7 Communicator device  “which is tightly integrated with enhanced Ovi services and apps, and reinforces Nokia’s vision of a mobile industry that is increasingly being defined by socially connected, location-based devices and experiences.” This new version does away with the clamshell form factor and moves toward the ever-popular sliding style device, similar to their N97 and N97 Mini devices.

Only some initial specs are available but they include:

  • Runs Symbian^3
  • 4-inch tilting 640×360 touchscreen display
  • 16GB mass memory, 350 MB internal memory, 256MB RAM, 1024MB ROM
  • 8MP camera with 720p video

The E7 will be released by the end of the year, and will run 495 Euros.
