The cost of making mobile phone coverage available on the London Underground, said to be around £100M, is to be paid for by the 5 main UK mobile networks – O2, Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and Three.

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, personally intervened after discussions, ongoing for years, had failed to reach an agreement because of prohibitively high costs. The plan is to provide coverage by a very long transmitter snaking along the top of the Tube’s tunnels, with antennas placed on the ends of each carriage.
