Sony has finally jumped into the tablet game, with the announcement at their Tokyo press event of 2 Android tablets – the S1 and dual screen S2.
The S1 has a 9.4-inch display and features a curved top resembling a ‘folded magazine’. Sony say it features ‘off centre gravity design’ to make it easier to hold which makes sense if much of the weight is right at the edge that you are holding. It is designed for enjoying the web and rich content on a large screen, and also has infrared technology allowing it to work as a universal remote controls for a variety of AV devices.
The S2 has two 5.5-inch displays that can be folded for easy portability, each running at 1,024 x 480 pixels. Android has been customised to work over the 2 displays with things like email optimised for the form factor (keyboard on lower screen, message body on the top) and Sony’s own e-reader App can be used in vertical book form.
Both the S1 and S2 are PlayStation Certified allowing you to play ‘first generation’ playstation titles, and support DLNA letting you push audio and video content to DNLA compliant TV’s and music devices. Both are WiFi and 3G/4G compatible. No more details on specs such as memory or processor as yet.
