iPhone App Review: Locavore

I’m all about buying local. Typically, when it comes to the farmer’s markets here in town, you can usually pick up fruits and veggies for less than or equal to what you’d pay in the store, plus you’re supporting local farmer and growers while getting fresher, larger, and sometimes organically grown foods.

With this in mind, I am always trying to figure out what kind of fruits and vegetables I can expect sellers to have at the market. If I’m looking for something in particular, it’s nice to know for sure if I can expect to see it there, or if I’m going to have to pick it up at the grocery store. This is where an App such as Locavore comes in handy.

This being said, my favourite part of the Locavore App is probably the most simplest portion of the app–the “in season” breakdown. At a quick glance, after letting the App determine my location, I can quickly and easily access this kind of information in a snap. The Locavore app brings up the fruits and vegetables that you will be able to find that are currently in season, how long they will be in season, and what crops are coming up. This is a great way to be able to plan your grocery list for both the grocery store and the farmer’s market, knowing what you might find available that weekend.

Another awesome option that the Locavore App has is the ability to use GPS to find nearby farms and farmer markets. With a quick click of the pinpoint, you can find out the location, hours, and contact information for each farmer’s market location, which makes it a great way to find local produce that you might not have even considered before.

In addition, Locavore also offers recipes for in-season and out of season fruits and vegetables to give you some meal prep ideas, which is a pretty neat way to consider purchasing food and finding a great way to utilize them. Say you’re picking up a huge carton of tomatoes, you can browse some salsa recipes to see how much you need to make a batch for an upcoming party. The recipe idea is something I would not have initially thought of incorporating into such an app, but I can see how it is a nice addition to everything else the Locavore App provides.

A fun little add-on is that you can even post on your social networking sites when you “eat local.” You can post what you ate and add a little note to go with it. Unfortunately, I noticed that option doesn’t get used a lot, because when you search for local posts, (in my area anyway) it shows that no one has posted anything for about a year. Oh well. But, all things considered, there are a lot of neat little things built into this App.

Locavore is a free app to download, developed by Hevva Corp, and I really think it’s pretty decent. It is easy to navigate, colorful and appealing, while being informative and helpful at a glance. What more can you ask for when you’re just trying to figure out where to buy broccoli this weekend?
