Review: V-Moda Crossfade LP Headphones

We’ve been testing out a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP headphones which are full ‘over-the-ear’ headphones, and are relatively small and lightweight (280g) for their class. According to the V-Moda website the crossfade LP’s were “developed over the span of four years in collaboration with some of the world’s top musicians, DJs and producers” and they certainly convey style with solid build quality.

The Crossfade LP’s arrive in a very solid box, with a nice ribbon seal that needs to be cut to access them. Inside the headphones are in an “Exoskeleton Case” which is a fancy name for a semi-rigid case that zips close to protect the headphones and accompanying leads. The headphones do not fold flat like some other models which means they take up more space when travelling, but this removes a weak point where many headphones can break so that is fine with me!

The headphones themselves are beautifully designed, with soft padded ear cups (with air-cushion memory foam) and a comfortable padded headband. The earcups are connected to the headband by solid metal arms that allow height adjustment. There is no doubt as to the quality of these headphones, they fit snugly over your ears, and have an aggressive design with a choice of 5 colours (White Pearl, Phantom Chrome, Gunmetal Black, Nero and Rouge) with an outer metal ‘plate’ with mock bolts holding them in place. V-Moda are also now offering a ‘customise’ option (currently US only) to further individualise your headphones.

The audio quality is fantastic, and you can really tell V-Moda spent time with musicians and DJs to develop these. The Crossfade’s have 50mm dual-diaphragm high-definition drivers which they say “delivers the sound of multiple drivers with the efficiency of a single smaller driver”. The sound is certainly excellent, with various types of music sounding great, although they are perhaps better suited to bassier dance and rock music than softer soul and classical music. Playing around with the iPhone settings and turning on Treble Booster however helped to give a more balanced sound.

The Crossfade LPs come with two separate audio cables, one regular 3.5mm one, and one with an inline remote control with mic allowing you to use the headphones with an iPhone for handsfree calling. The remote also supports call send/end, track pause, track skip and volume control on the iPhone. The cables themselves are of fantastic quality with 24k gold-plated connectors and a Kevlar®-reinforced outer cover – try finding that in your local Hi-Fi shop! There is also an included 1/4″ adapter to connect to larger audio equipment connections.

Each Crossfade LP is backed by an one-year premier warranty, and if you damage them after that they have a “Replay Replacement Program” where you’ll get a 50% off lifetime replacement guarantee.

Prices aren’t cheap, but in my opinion they are entirely worth it. Available online at places like Amazon UK from £99.99, if you appreciate build quality and love your music to sound like you’re at the live event then these are the headphones for you.
