Vodafone have announced the launch of the ‘Smart’ 858 – a budget Android 2.2 phone with their own branding. Featuring a 2.8″ QVGA capacitive touchscreen as well as 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, and a range of custom individually customisable cover designs the phone looks promising for the PAYG market. The availability of full Android Market is also a good plus for a budget Android handset, however there is no mention of A-GPS/GPS which would be a big omission with the current surge of location based services (LBS) and Apps currently available. It should also be fairly portable with dimensions of 56 x 106 x 12mm and a weight of only 100g.
The Smart is expected to be available early summer and will retail for around €90.
