A new study from Connected Intelligence, a new service from market research company The NPD Group suggests that nomadic (fixed locations outside the home, such as coffee shops and airports) video use will climb to 175 million by the end of 2015 which will come close to the amount of video consumed in-home.
The news will be welcomed by the mobile operators who are looking to offload a lot of their heavy mobile video users by investing in an increased WiFi Hotspot infrastructure. Its not all good news for them though, as mobile broadband video usage is also set to grow, although at a slower rate rising to 77million by the end of 2015, up from 6million at the end of 2010.
“Over the next few years, broadband video usage will predominantly be driven in the home by Blu-ray players and connected televisions,” said Ross Rubin, executive director of industry analysis at NPD, and co-author of the report. “Handset manufacturers, though, have opportunities to tailor devices and software to the increasing prevalence of video.”
The research from Connected Intelligence analyses three core components – the device, the type of broadband access, and the content. No details on the survey group make=up were available.
