Apple released iOS5.0.1 over the weekend to patch a security vulnerability address a number of bugs and hopefully resolve the battery life issued many people have been experiencing.
Security researcher Charlie Miller revealed that he had found an exploit in Apple’s iOS software that allows an App to run arbitrary code. Apple generally approves all code that is submitted to the AppStore and forbids the execution of un-approved code, but Miller discovered a way to bypass this restriction. This update patches that ability and secures the vulnerability.
Possibly attributed to Location Services since iOS5 was released many people have noticed reduce battery performance on the iPhone4 and much lower than claimed times on the 4S. We’ll wait to see if this update actually solves these issues, but there has been no noticeable improvement on my iPhone4 in the first 24 hours since update.
This was also the first chance many iPhone users had to test out the on device delta update feature, which allows them to only download the parts of the OS that have actually changed. My update was pretty snappy at around 44MB, and was done in about 5 minutes which is much quicker than the usual 100MB+ update that is required.
This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
– Fixes bugs affecting battery life
– Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
– Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
– Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
The update also brings multi-touch gestures to the original iPad, begging the question why it wasn’t on there in the first place.
