Jawbone Up – Personal Health Monitoring

Jawbone have released the Jawbone UP – a personal health monitoring tool that consists of a funky wristband and an associated iOS App. UP allows you to track your daily activity, sleep patterns, and eating habits helping you “live a healthier life” and is aimed at tackling the rising trend in issues such as sleep disorders, obesity and other food and exercise issues.

The UP looks smart and fun, it has its own internal battery that is good for around 10 days of use. The UP connects to your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad via a special double-ended headphone lead which it also uses to charge.

Wearing the UP on your wrist, it monitors your activity, rest, distance walked or run (it’s far more accurate if linked with the GPS from your iPhone) and even diet. The UP will monitor and track your exercise, and can even prompt you to get up and move if you’ve been sitting still too long with a gentle vibration reminder.

As someone who can either wake up feeling awake and refreshed, or tired and as if I haven’t slept, the sleep monitoring element of the UP is what interests me the most. The UP will monitor your sleep pattern and track when you are in light and deep sleep cycles. Tell the UP when you need to be awake and it can vibrate you wake you at the best moment in your sleep cycle up to 30minutes before the programmed time. The idea being you always wake up feeling alert and as if you’ve had a good sleep.

Lastly the UP and iOS App can track the food you eat, allowing you to enter it as a photo and then describe hoe you feel a short while after eating it. Its less of a calorie counter and more of a way of tracking which foods you like and which made you feel full or uncomfortable afterwards. Its probably the area I see least use in, but it might be helpful to people looking to improve their diet.

There are also Social Challenges, which allow you to participate in online group challenges such as Walking A Mile, or Clearing Your Plate to give you a connected feel to your health kick.

The UP band comes in three sizes (small, medium, large) and is water resistant to 1M meaning you can pretty much wear it all the time. Its available in seven colors (Dark Black, Dark Brown, Dark Red, Bright White, Bright Silver, Bright Red, Bright Blue) and is available for £79.99 at Jawbone.com, Apple retailers and also through O2 both online and in store.
