Twitter has announced changes to its technology allowing it to censor information in selective countries rather than a globally blanket ban. The Twitter blog posted an update to ‘The Tweets Must Flow’ post which last year spoke about the responsibilities and limits of the freedom of expression.
This update explained how Twitter now has the “ability to reactively withhold content from users in a specific country – while keeping it available in the rest of the world.” The new ‘transparency’ stance hopes to become a positive impact on freedom of expression, but already it has come under attack.
Twitter users have formed a protest using the hashtags #twittercensorship and #twitterblackout, and today will refuse to tweet in an attempt to rally against what they see as social networking censorship.
