The LG D1L To Compete Against Galaxy S3

LG is still basking in the glow of the launch of its first quad-core device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. That hasn’t put the Korean manufacturer off from launching another new device, the D1L as it is currently codenamed.

It’s a new flagship device for the company who seems to be content positioning itself at the top end of the market with its latest launches. The D1L is said to have a 4.7 inch touchscreen with a 1280 x 720 pixel display. Under the bonnet it will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. Specification wise that doesn’t make the D1L too dissimilar from the quad core the Optimus 4X HD. Whether or not the device will run on Ice Cream Sandwich, as the Optimus 4X does, remains to be seen.

Initial reports about the new LG device have seen it pitching itself against the Samsung galaxy S3. Neither device has been confirmed in terms of specifications but if the LG handset does drop in May, as reports suggest it could be here before the S3. LG Optimus 4X contracts are already on sale but are being overshadowed as people hold out for the S3.

Although Samsung wouldn’t be too happy, for buyers at least it would be good for the S3 to have sort of competition in the market. Compare it to its predecessor the S2, it pretty much wiped the floor with all Android competitors when it came out last year. While that is good news for Samsung and Google as it encouraged more developers to start making apps for Android and it raised the profile of the operating system for buyers we want more choice. More choice is obviously good in terms of buying a smartphone that suits our needs, obviously, rather than buying whatever is available, but it is also good in terms of price.

LG will have two high powered Android devices to take on the S3 charge. As well as the D1L in May the Optimus 4X HD is also launching in the UK. It has a 4.7 inch screen with a 720p display. It runs with a quad core Tegra 3 chip and has 1GB of RAM along with 16GB of storage. On the back is an 8 megapixel camera and a video with 1080p video recording capability. In terms of specification it’s likely the S3 will also have that same quad-core processor, so it could well be the Optimus that challenges the flagship Samsung device, rather than the D1l. What will make the big difference of course is price. Nothing has been confirmed by LG yet but it’s likely the Optimus 4X will be slightly more expensive than the D1Il in terms of processing speed.

LG might have tapered off in the UK market slightly over the course of 2011 where other Android competitors got more of a foothold in terms of sales. It has made real inroads in the US where is has led the way in terms of LTE technology and Android. Not available in the UK as well still wait for 4G but the return of the Korean name in terms of quality top-end smartphones is good for those who like their devices to come with a bit more punch.
