Apple has just confirmed the there have been 2 million iPhone5 pre-orders within the first 24 hours of going on sale.

The iOS6 equipped iPhone5, announced last Wednesday, may have had modest improvements leaving many wondering if it was worth the increased price, but that hasn’t stopped the land grab for pre-orders that became available at 8am on Friday 14th.

The figure is twice that of the iPhone4S when it became available, and within hours of being available estimated delivery had been pushed back from 1 week to 2 weeks, and then subsequently “2-3 weeks”.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said:

iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal. iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.
