TempleRun, an endless action video game, was first released on iOS for App Store on August 4, 2011. Initially, the game cost £0.69 but within a month it was released as a freemium app. Backed by word-of-mouth publicity and celebrity endorsements on Twitter, within a few weeks, the game gained soaring popularity and took the top spot in the Apple store charts.

The game was also later released on Google Play and currently boasts over 170 million downloads on Apple and Android devices. However, its popularity has waned a little in recent days even as it continues to be a phenomenon. The sequel to this game, Temple Run 2 was released recently and aims to regain some of the lost ground.

For beginners, the Temple Run game involves a runner who has to run for as long as possible without falling into any of the numerous game generated traps. The latest version of the game retains the basic flavour of the original game. It still uses the simple touchscreen gestures to jump, turn and slide and the player can still collect coins and power-ups along the way. However, there are important differences. It is much better designed with detailed environments and layered topography. To obtain such detailed and rich scenery, developer Imangi Studios has roped in Unity development platform for Temple Run 2.

New locations and design add new factors in the game. At the beginning, the player will take a ride on a zip line through the clouds. After that, there are trick turns, dangerous passages and hills. The player now needs to run from a giant demonic ape than from several smaller ones. Also, Temple Run 2 includes a mine-cart section in which the player, when he reaches the mouth of a mine, leaps into a minecart and steers through forks by tilting right and left and avoiding stray beams. Each of these factors adds more excitement to the game.

Just like the original TempleRun game, its successor is also a freemium game. However unlike the earlier version that had only coins as the virtual currency, the sequel has two virtual currencies: coins and gems. Gems can be used for consumable items such as restarting from the point of death and one-time boosts of power-ups.

The latest version has scenery that seems to pop-up suddenly out of nowhere but the performance of the game has not compromised. There is never a slowdown and the game is not impacted in any way.

The original game was developed by Imangi Studios and involved three players – husband-and-wife team Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova and the artist Kiril Tchangov. The sequel involves two more people: Jeff Ruedifer and Pete Parisi from FuzzyCube Software.

Temple Run 2 is the one of the biggest game releases this year. Though the fundamentals of the game have not been changed much, the new version is definitely a great improvement and game lovers are likely to find something to cheer about it.
