Top 5 Mobile Phones In The Movies

x phone from xmen 2

Mobile phones are everywhere, and manufacturers pay big money to advertise them. But in terms of the “cool factor” nothing compares to good product placement of a mobile phone in a block buster movie.

I decided to take a look at the Top 5 Phones to feature in a movie, and to see if they managed to bring any additional extra ‘cool factor’ to the film.

5. X Phone in Xmen 2

The X phone was a cool looking phone that Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) had in the movie Xmen 2. There wasn’t much particularly amazing about it other than its futuristic looks, but it fitted the part nicely.

4. Motorola MicroTac – Reservoir Dogs

The Motorola MicroTac was one of the first clamshell ‘flip phones’ and it led the way for Motorola to produce numerous iterations of the handset, culminating in one of the most successful phones of its time, the Motorola Razr flip phone. The MicroTac was seen in the impossibly cool film Reservoir Dogs, used by My Green (Tim Roth).

3. Apple iPhone4 – Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

Apple paid a lot of money to feature prominently throughout the 4th instalment of the mission Impossible franchise – iPhones, iPads and Macbooks can all be seen throughout the movie, including the shot below with a nice close-up of the iPhone4.

The phone serves many roles, not the least of which is simply having the main character Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) look cool with an Apple product, reinforcing the needs of all Apple owners worldwide.

2. Nokia in The Matrix

The Matrix trilogy took you to a whole new world of cool – futuristic and high-tech each movie was awash with special effects and gadgets.

The main character Neo (Keanu Reeves) needed an extra special phone to use in the movie, and Nokia obliged with a composite phone made up from the banana shaped Nokia 8110 and the spring loaded sliding keypad cover from the 7110.

Nokia missed a trick here as everyone wanted on of these phones, alas it was never mass produced.

1. Sony Ericsson in Tomorrow Never Dies

Bond films are always cool. The girls, the cars, and (sometimes) the phones! In this film Bond receives the usual gadgets from Q one of which is a Sony Ericsson handset, based loosely on the R380 handset, but with a few more advanced features!

This amazing handset was not only a phone, but also contained a spring loaded taser, and for it’s main party trick – folded open to become a fully fledged remote control for his issued BMW car, leading to an ingenious car park chase where Bond escapes the bad guys by driving his car from a safe location, using it as a distraction by driving it up to the roof of a car park  and then driving it over the edge!

So there you have the Top 5 Mobile Phones in the movies! Unfortunately, most were never made into production units, but for special offers on mobile phones that might bring some of this technology into your hands, keep an eye this site where we’ll be sure to keep you informed.
