Apple iOS7 iMessage Problems

Since its release last week, millions of people have updated their iPhones and iPads to iOS7, and then the subsequent 7.0.2 update Apple quickly pushed out to fix a security issue with the passcode unlock.

However, in the last few days more and more people are experiencing problems with iMessage.

Typical symptoms include:

  • iMessage stuck at “Sending…”
  • iMessage not sending at all
  • iMessages out of sync across devices
  • iMessage failures not falling back to SMS messages where possible.

Apple are apparently aware of the problem, and in typical admit no real problem fashion, have simply said they are “working on it”.

Short terms, there is a solution though. However it works for a while and then needs to be repeated!

Step 1. (Optional) Disable iMessage in Settings > Messages

Step 2. Turn off iPhone/iPad completely. Hold power button until red “swipe to turn off” appears

Step 3. Turn on iPhone/iPad again.

Step 4. If you disabled iMessages in Step 1 – enable them again

Step 5. Return to Messages and find messages now set / sending / with an unsent red exclamation mark. If Unsent, tap the red exclamation mark and Retry. Message will now send.

The disable / enable steps are being mentioned by the likes of O2 support etc. but I didn’t need to do this to get them working again for me. Simply powering off and on again leaves iMessages working for approximately the rest of the day. I don’t have a precise figure on this. They works throughout yesterday, but were failing again today, until I repeated the steps above.

I’d advise against trying Reset Network Settings (Settings > General > Reset ) which some people are suggesting, this causes your iPhone/iPad to forget many settings including stored passwords for WiFi hotspots requiring you to re-enter them all again. If you have many stored like me, this is a real pain. Only try this if none of the above has helped you.

Apple will hopefully push out iOS7.0.3 soon whcih we hope will resolve this problem.

Update:

Apple has told the Wall Street Journal that “it’s aware of a glitch in iOS7 that is disrupting some iMessage texts and is working on a fix”.

We are aware of an issue that affects a fraction of a percent of our iMessage users, and we will have a fix available in an upcoming software update,” Apple said in a statement. “In the meantime, we encourage any users having problems to reference our troubleshooting documents or contact AppleCare to help resolve their issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes impacted users.
