Lenovo Wins Title As Third Largest Smartphone Maker

According to a new report, Lenovo recently surpassed LG as the third largest smartphone maker in the world, behind only Samsung and Apple. Lenovo has garnered a lot of its market share from Asian countries like China, where the company was founded and whose large population was apparently enough to help the company become a monster in worldwide smartphone sales.

Lenovo S5000This is a great win for Lenovo since the company’s smartphones don’t have much of a presence in the United States and Europe, with the exception, of course, being the Vibe Z, the smartphone with Snapdragon 800, a dual-SIM tray and a Samsung-inspired flip cover. Although it may seem Lenovo is an afterthought behind giants like LG, HTC, Motorola and Sony, it is not.

According to the report, Samsung owns 32.1 percent of the market, while Apple is in second with 12.1 percent of market share. Now Lenovo is third, which is one step up from last year, when they were fourth, trailing LG as well.

Lenovo has had great success in the past with its variety of tablets, which it makes for all crowds of people, from kids, to businesspeople to travelers. With the news that tablets have outsold laptops, one would surmise that the greatest chunk of Lenovo’s sales would be in this realm, but that might not necessarily be true. Reports show that sales of Lenovo’s tablets rank fourth in the world.

One of the tablets that Lenovo has released includes the new Yoga Tablet 8, which operates on Windows 8. The company is rumored to be making a new smartphone that would operate on Windows 8 as well, which would be a large departure from its previous platform of making Google-based Android devices.

JD Howard, the Vice President of Lenovo’s mobile division said that the company will release a Windows-based mobile phone, should the market determine there is a demand for it. If it happens, this could pit Lenovo right up with Nokia’s Lumia line of smartphones.

In China, Lenovo is going particularly bold. The company may be number three in the world behind Apple and Samsung, but Lenovo has apparently implemented a strategy that would help it to pass Samsung as the country’s top smartphone provider, in terms of market share. Part of the reason Lenovo is so popular in China are its channel partnerships and its sales channels, which are stronger than its competitors.

In addition to smartphones and tablets, Lenovo is known for its smart television, the Lenovo LeTV, which integrates software, hardware and cloud services to the television watching experience. Since 2005, Lenovo has also manufactured and sold the ThinkPad, which is the laptop that is certified for use in outer space.

Whether Lenovo choose to focus its attention on smartphones, tablets or smart TVs, it looks like 2014 will be a big year for the company.
