The Kano Computer Kickstarter looks to bring cheap DIY Computer Kits to Kids

Depending on your age, you probably remember the days when kids had to use dusty old PC’s to learn computer skills. Well, those days are long gone as iPads and Chromebooks are standard in a lot schools these days. Kids are getting smarter at an earlier age, and if your child is into tech there’s a new Kickstarter project you’ll want to check out by the name of Kano.

Kano is a computer and coding kit built for kids to help them learn code while opening their eyes to the wonders of technology. If you’re thinking it sounds too complicated for a child, you’d be wrong as the folks behind Kano have made things extremely simple and kid friendly. Each kit contains everything you’ll need to build your own little PC aside from a monitor, but your TV will can double as one of those thanks to the HDMI out on the board.kano-2

So what’s in a kit? You’ll get the Kano OS on an 8GB SD card, a Raspberry Pi Model B board, a DIY speaker, custom case, mods & stencils, stickers, WiFi powerup, HDMI & Mini USB cables, the Kano Keyboard Combo, tutorial books, and a smart power plug. As you can see from the picture below, a lot of time and effort has been put into making the Kano kits and even the packaging is simple, sleek, and recyclable. It’s been designed to be transported easily, and it’s packaged to fit through 85% of urban mailboxes which is a nice touch.kano-1

At the time of this writing, the cheapest full kit you can buy is $119 which includes the full kit and a few other goodies. All the “Early Bird” specials have sold out (twice), but there are some cheaper pledge levels that allow you to show your support and still get cool swag like T-shirts, the Kano OS, and that cool looking Kano Keyboard.

The Kano Kickstarter has still got quite a bit of time left, and they’ve already blown past their initial funding goal of $100,000 by raising a whopping $981,172. There are still some serious stretch goals on the table well within reach including bringing “Kano Blocks” to the web at $1 million and Android/iOS at $1.5 million. If they can hit $2 million, they plan on designing a Kano Robot Kit which would be a blast. If you want to show Kano some funding love, just hit up the link below to check out their Kickstarter page.
