Apple got our attention last year when they finally decided to do something different by releasing two models of the iPhone. We’ve heard rumors of a bigger iPhone coming down the pipeline later this year, and today Bloomberg broke news of a new Apple TV box that could be headed your way before Christmas.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the new Apple TV box will have a speedier processor than the current model and an upgraded interface for easier navigation. The company is said to be shooting for an April unveiling and hopes to have the device out in plenty of time for the holidays. The report goes on to say that Apple is still in talks with Time Warner Cable and other cable providers as well to bring additional content to the new Apple TV.

Tim Cook promised folks that Apple would have a big year in 2014, and it’s all but a given that we’ll see an iWatch of sorts before 2015 rolls around along with the next generation of iPhones and iPads. A new Apple TV box would certainly make a lot of folks happy, but additional content may not be enough to contend with upcoming set-top boxes from Amazon and ASUS.

If Apple truly wants to make an impact this year, they should integrate gaming into the new Apple TV as that’s something iOS aficionados have been longing for. Amazon’s box (or anyone else’s) wouldn’t stand a chance against a set-top box from Apple that has access to the games on the App Store. While it doesn’t appear that’s in the cards this time around, hopefully it’s a feature we will see in a future Apple device.
