Electronic cigarettes – which device is right for you?

Electronic cigarettes are a prime example of a technology that has taken the world by storm. Since their launch to market in 2004, estimates by Euromonitor expect them to be worth around £1.5 billion globally. Wells Fargo expects this to rise to around £6 billion by 2017. Impressive figures and there’s more. In the UK, there are 1.5 million ‘vapers’ and the industry reached around £193 million (Nielsen) by the end of 2013, meaning this technology is here to stay.

So what products are available? We take a look to help you to decide which device is right for you.

Essentially the first product to market, these devices were made to look and feel like cigarettes (as the term suggests). Hon Lik has been widely credited with inventing them and they are made up of a battery and a refill with disposable and non-disposable versions. Many users will try a disposable first however; an electronic cigarette starter kit is a much better option if you want to have something reliable on the go. They generally cost around £20 to £30 for a decent one and come with a 220mAh battery (or two) as well as refills and a USB charger. Each battery lasts around 4 hours and due to their size, it may be best to take a spare battery with you if you’re out for the day. To use, simply screw on a refill and take a drag, this makes the battery heat the e-liquid inside the refill and produces vapour.

They are made up of a battery and a clearomiser which the user refills themselves with the flavoured e-liquid of their choice. With a larger 440mAh battery which lasts around 48 hours between charging, they have grown in popularity recently with companies such as Freshcig electronic cigarettes seeing around five of their eVolve tank style devices purchased for around every one cigalike device. Using these devices means that you can also save more money, as using bottled e-liquid is less expensive than the equivalent in pre filled refills.

Also called AVP’s (Advanced Personal Vaporisers), these devices come in all sorts of shapes and sizes with many people customising and even making their own. These hard-core vapers have MOD’s as an accessory and can spend hundreds of pounds on making or enhancing their devices. As you will be able to tell from looking at images on various sites, the batteries can last a very long time due to their size and they generally produce much higher amounts of vapour. MODS can also have additional optional settings in which you can select the voltage output of the battery and control the amount of vapour emitted. As mentioned before, they are much more expensive and generally only for very experienced vapers and despite having longer lasting batteries can be quite cumbersome.

There’s a place for all types of electronic cigarettes in the market place and we’re sure there’ll be even more to choose from in the future as the industry continues to innovate. For now, there’s still something to suit everyone, it’s just a case of doing your research.
