It’s hard not to know anyone who doesn’t indulge in a little online gaming nowadays. Every member of the family, be it little Johnny blasting his enemies on Mafia Wars, little Suzie tending to her crops on FarmVille, Mum and Grandma enjoying a spot of bingo, or Dad and Grandad having a slick game of poker, is enjoying online games, and for good reason.
Technological advancements, societal changes and a huge diversity in games have all helped along online gaming to the state it is today, with online casino gaming one of the biggest beneficiaries of the growth.
Online casino games are big news. From their humble beginnings; poorly coded, clip art-laden websites brimming with pop-ups; online casino games have really taken advantage of new technological increases. Web 2.0 (or 3.0, or 4.0…not quite sure of the point to which we’ve ‘innovented’ to yet) has allowed for incredibly complex, functional, websites and apps. These apps, that offer free or cheap online casino games in a package that anyone can enjoy, are also enjoying success due to the enhanced security that web companies now offer. Credit and debit card transactions are now a thing of the past, replaced by secure wire transfers and services such as PayPal. For the player who enjoys spending a little and winning a lot, the fear of the more malicious aspects of the internet has been removed.
The variety of games on offer is also a huge draw. As mentioned earlier, Bingo games are being developed due to their appealing to the fairer sex just as much as poker, roulette and blackjack are being utilised to appeal to the male gender; all of this riding on the success of poker tournaments, land-based casino growth and, naturally, the ongoing gambling deregulation taking place across the world. Games are no longer fixed, that is, the situation a few years ago where one would buy a disk-based game and be stuck with the games offered. Online game companies now regularly produce new games, offering free plays and trial periods so customers can try out the game prior to their decision over whether or not to spend their hard-earned money.
The fact is, gambling is not the dirty word it once was. Crack-infested alleyways, filled with buckfast-coiffing reprobates, tossing cigarette-stained dice against a wall that’s in dire need of structural repairs; gambling simply isn’t like this anymore. With a number of services on offer to prevent gambling addiction, account controls on the sites themselves, and an overall feeling that gambling doesn’t have to inhabit the dangerous end of the spectrum, people are seeing gambling as a legitimate pastime.
