I take a look at the Top iOS 14 features that Apple announced in June 2020, set to be released this Autumn.
iOS 14 is one of Apple’s biggest iOS updates to date, introducing Home screen design changes, major new features, updates for existing apps, Siri improvements, and many other tweaks that streamline the iOS interface.
Home Screen Widgets
The lack of the ability to modify or customise the Home Screen beyond the icons layout has been a widely held complaint since before iOS7. It’s taken another 7 versions since then, but Apple has finally introduced some Home Screen widgets.
Widgets can be dragged from the Today view right onto the Home Screen, and can be pinned in different sizes.
With a Smart Stack feature, the iPhone can use on-device intelligence to surface the right widget based on time, location, and activity. Each Home Screen page can display widgets customised for work, travel, sports, and more. The Today section where widgets are housed has also been redesigned, and there’s a widgets gallery where users can choose new widgets from apps and customise those widgets.
A big change to various various applications is the modification so they allow you to continue working around then. Siri, Calling, FaceTime and Videos have all been updated so they don’t demand the full screen to function.
Siri has an all-new compact design that allows you to refer to information onscreen and seamlessly launch into your next task. As you start a request, Siri pops up at the bottom of the screen. The result appears at the top of the screen like a notification. Results have been updated to give you just the information you need in a new compact layout.
The new App Library automatically organises all of your apps into one simple, easy‑to‑navigate view. Apps are sorted by category and your most used apps are always just one tap away.
Pin your favourite conversations or group conversations to the top of your conversation list so you can always get to them.
Maps has been updated to add Cycling routes and Electric Vehicle charging points and route planning. iOS 14 can sync with your car to check battery status and determine when to locate a charging point.
Maps also now lets you see congestion zone tolls on the map and can route you around them if you like.
Conversations across languages should feel natural and easy, and should have the ability to remain private. Introducing the all-new Translate app, designed for conversations across 11 different languages.
