What are the Most Reliable Games and Services?

Have you had your fill of gaming this year? What have been your top takeaways? As 2020 comes to a close, it’s time to look back at what we’ve been playing during this very strange time and reflect on the most reliable games and services we’ve come to depend on, as well as those that we’re happy to leave behind.

After all, as gamers we’re part of an industry that’s set to be worth £10 billion by 2023, so it’s worth knowing the games and services to invest in. If you’re ready to go into the new year armed with information about how to choose the most reliable games and services, read on.

What are the most unreliable services?

A reliable service needs to have a good, if not excellent, connection. It also needs to not completely disconnect just as you’re getting into the game you’re playing.

According to Mazuma, which used Downdetector’s archive of online gaming disruptions in the last year, Steam was the most disrupted service, averaging 158 outages. In second place was Discord, with 129 outages, but Xbox Live wasn’t far behind, coming in third place with 114 disruptions. That’s an average of 10.36 outages per month for the Xbox online platform – something to think about if you’re considering making the move to PlayStation.

At the other end of the top 10 are Uplay, which saw 17 total outages. In 10th place is Epic Games Store, which had just 16 outages in a year. If you’re looking for reliable services that deliver barely-interrupted playing, it’s worth choosing between these two platforms.

What are the most popular games of 2020?

So, what have we all been playing this year? Interestingly, seven years on from its initial launch, Grand Theft Auto V is still making the top 10, coming in at number eight with over 260,000 players in the first half of 2020.

But it’s Epic Games’ Fortnite that the nation can’t get enough of. In April the game saw a record breaking 12.3 million player-peak during the Astronomical Concert.

League of Legends made second place, with 8 million people playing the game every day according to Riot Games, while Crossfire also hit the 8 million players-number. This is ahead of the release of Crossfire X in 2021.

What games are considered the most unreliable?

While Steam saw the most interruptions in the last year, there are some repeat offenders when it comes to games cutting out too. League of Legends may be the second-most played game of the year, but it’s also the second-most unreliable, with 90 outages per month.

Football favourite, FIFA ranked third for the most interruptions, with 83 outages and GTA V was number four with 82 outages. But it was Call of Duty that saw the highest number of issues. It’s ahead of League of Legends with a huge 203 outages.

Five games saw smooth playing with no interruptions: Candy Crush, Neverwinter, No Man’s Sky, Anthem, and Realm Royale. A real mixed bag of games, but one that offers easy, outage-free gaming.

As you make decisions about what platform you use and the game you play next, it’s worth considering these numbers before you invest. Smooth gaming is within your reach in 2021.
