The days when DJs needed turntables and a mixer are long gone. Today DJing technology is very advanced – and digital. The equipment available to DJs today is easy to use and also very affordable, which makes this a great profession to get started in if you are interested in pursuing a music career. The good thing about a career as a DJ is that you don’t necessarily need to take any classes to learn the craft. Youtube videos and the right software can be enough to get started and begin earning money, although taking a course can always be a good idea.

Which tech do I need when starting to digital DJ?

There are a few different programmes and tools available to DJs. The main software providers that are used are Traktor (Native Instruments) and Serato. Which programme you end up choosing depends on you, but these are some excellent choices when it comes to DJ tech equipment. Traktor Pro 2 and Serato DJ are the newest versions of the programmes and contain many great tools. Here you can mix with a large number of decks, can slice and also use samples in your music.

What are the main components necessary to becoming an established DJ?

First and foremost, you’ll need a good laptop. Preferably your laptop should come with RAM of at least 8 GB and a hard drive with at least 1 TB as well as a good screen resolution. Next, are the decks you need. There are many different decks available today that are used by DJs, from Technics to Pioneer, Denon to Reloop to Audio-Technica. Its best to do some research and find the DJ gear that works for you and that you feel comfortable with on stage. Aside from the decks, choose the appropriate software programmes (for example Traktor or Serato) and choose high-end headphones that allow you to hear all the nuances.

Finally, the music! What type of music you focus on is your choice, but check out some current artists that are still relevant to see if they inspire you.
