Aruba Instant On Review: How to Build an Always Connected Business

When we talk about smart business, we usually think of a house full of speakers and voice assistants. However, we can still find one more use, related to one of the fundamental elements in our society: the Internet.

And it is that without a doubt being able to be always connected has become the pillar of our social, private and business life, always seeking to maintain the best coverage and speed wherever we are. Some qualities that we can find gathered in the Aruba Instant On, presented under the trust of one of the most renowned infrastructure providers in the sector, HPE Aruba.

With up to five types of units available, in our case we had the opportunity to test one of the indoor routers and access points, and a use orientation for desktop surfaces or walls.

Aruba Instant On Review – (AP11D) Specifications

  • Power: 802.3af PoE or 12Vdc
  • Dimensions: 150 x 86 x 40mm
  • Weight: 313 grams

Before starting the analysis, we must know what these devices are and what they are used for.

And it is that although the rest of the Aruba Instant On devices have the objective of facilitating the creation of networks without the need for cables, with options such as WiFi Mesh (or mesh networks) made up of a router that acts as the main station and a series of additional access points and repeaters, in this case we find a single device capable of covering medium-sized surfaces such as businesses, maintaining full coverage between rooms and thicker walls, and even in spaces distributed over several floors. In short, a WiFi network designed to eliminate the blind spots of a small business or SMEs.

On an aesthetic level, we find a white device with a discreet design, with a fairly small and manageable size and weight that will allow us to place it anywhere, and even attach it to a wall. In addition to the current controller itself and the ethernet cables, we will not find any type of physical controller, being the only interaction with the user through a pair of LED indicators that will inform us of the status of the main connection, and an auxiliary input to connect USB drives.

And it is that all the functions of the Aruba Instant On will be controlled through a free mobile application, available for iOS and Android; and a platform for computers available from a private portal, which will allow us to access the network from any browser. From this application, in addition to the connection status and speed, we can also easily see the number of connected devices, as well as their individual data upload and download costs through the network.

In addition, we will also have access to the secondary network activation and deactivation menu for guests or clients, with which we can establish a small customizable registration landing page for our business; as well as a small control panel to restart the network remotely in the event of connection failures such as blackouts (in this case, it always depends on the devices having a connection to the power supply). In general, we find a very simple and intuitive interface that will allow us to configure our network and start it up in a matter of minutes. In addition, we will also find a large number of additional details and more extensive control tools for the most applied.

Finally, all software and security updates will be carried out automatically, so we won’t have to worry about possible out-of-dates or temporary vulnerabilities in our network.

Usage experience and performance

As we anticipated, this device provides us with a dual network amplitude for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz lines available simultaneously under the same network name, capable of covering without problem the more than 150 square meters of our office, also demonstrating its scope. to areas close to other heights. And it is that the Aruba Instant On AP11D are optimized for use in busy places such as receptions or medium-sized offices.

Thus, using a symmetrical 300 Mbps fibre optic line for the tests, although we have not been able to reach the true capacity ceiling that this device promises, having been able to connect only about 20 simultaneous devices, we have been able to verify the great fluidity of both wireless and analogue connections.

Another advantage of using a single, more powerful connection point to cover these larger spaces is the possibility of avoiding drops in the connection speed of some repeaters, maintaining the total original signal at all times. Although we have been able to notice a drop in the intensity of the signal at some more distant points.

However, given the growing interest in connected devices, it is surprising that these devices do not have dedicated support with Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri, nor do other automation and IoT applications such as IFTTT. I hope this Aruba Instant On review has been helpful!
