Heathrow Expands ChargeBox Fast Charging Stations Across Terminals

Heathrow Airport has taken another major step in enhancing passenger experience by rolling out ChargeBox fast charging stations across Terminals 3, 4, and 5. The deployment follows the success of a trial in Terminal 2, which has now been converted into a permanent feature. With 41 new charging stations, each equipped with 16 endpoints, Heathrow is providing a 300 per cent increase in mobile charging capacity compared with legacy facilities. For an airport that serves nearly 84 million passenger journeys annually, this development is set to make a meaningful impact on convenience and satisfaction.

The new FASTPodiums deliver quick and reliable charging, with 75 per cent of sessions achieving a boost of more than 20 per cent battery life in just 10 minutes. This is particularly important in a hub environment like Heathrow, where digital reliance is growing and passengers increasingly need access to power for mobile boarding passes, travel apps, and entertainment.

From Trial to Permanent Deployment

The decision to accelerate the rollout of ChargeBox stations across Heathrow’s terminals came after just four months of what was initially planned as a six-month trial in Terminal 2. The trial involved upgrading six existing charging poles and quickly demonstrated the benefits of the new system. The units recorded near-perfect uptime, with almost no requirement for intervention from Heathrow’s support teams and minimal hardware replacements.

Passenger feedback was overwhelmingly positive, pointing to the reliability and speed of the stations as key advantages. Data also revealed significant demand: the best-performing unit in Terminal 2 recorded 2,486 charges in a single week, averaging 355 per day. This level of usage clearly highlighted the need for expansion across the airport.

Now fully deployed, the 41 FASTPodiums are collectively delivering over 7,000 charges daily, which equates to more than 2.5 million charges annually. By comparison, the legacy infrastructure was struggling to keep pace with demand, often leaving passengers searching for outlets or resorting to carrying bulky portable power banks. The new solution removes this friction from the passenger journey.

Passenger Behaviour and Charging Preferences

Analysis of passenger behaviour has provided further insights into how travellers are using the new charging infrastructure. A striking 9 in 10 passengers opt for direct-to-device charging using ChargeBox’s reinforced cables or the integrated Qi2 wireless pads. Among these, more than 70 per cent choose USB-C and Lightning connections, which together account for nearly three-quarters of all charging minutes to date.

This trend underscores two important points: first, that wired connections continue to provide the fastest and most intuitive experience for most users, and second, that Apple and modern Android devices dominate the passenger mix at Heathrow. The ability to deliver high-performance charging across these devices ensures that passengers can power up quickly and return to their journeys with minimal delay.

By providing durable, tamper-resistant cables as well as wireless options, ChargeBox has designed the FASTPodiums to withstand heavy daily usage in one of the busiest international airports in the world. The system’s scalability also ensures that Heathrow can continue to adapt as new devices and standards emerge.

Enhancing the Passenger Journey

The broader significance of the rollout becomes clear when viewed in the context of wider digitalisation in air travel. According to a recent ACI Europe survey, 73 per cent of passengers rely heavily on digital services throughout their journeys. However, confidence drops significantly among those aged 55 and older, with battery anxiety cited as one of the main causes of stress. For these travellers, running out of power can undermine their ability to access boarding passes, communicate with family, or navigate through airports.

By addressing this challenge head-on, Heathrow is removing a key source of digital friction. Dependable charging not only reduces stress but also boosts confidence in the wider digital travel ecosystem. This, in turn, supports smoother passenger flows, fewer delays at boarding gates, and higher overall satisfaction levels. With more than 2.5 million expected charging sessions per year, the new stations are set to make a measurable contribution to Heathrow’s customer experience metrics.

The ChargeBox solution is also supported by smart technology. Its Charging as a Service (CaaS) model provides real-time insights into passenger usage, enabling Heathrow to optimise infrastructure placement and maintenance. Automated fault detection removes the need for time-consuming manual inspections, ensuring uptime remains consistently high. For an operation as complex as Heathrow, these efficiencies translate into both cost savings and enhanced passenger trust.

Voices from Heathrow and ChargeBox

The rollout has been welcomed by Heathrow’s leadership team. Helen Elsby, Chief Solutions Officer at Heathrow, commented:

With the rollout of ChargeBox stations across a further three Heathrow terminals, we are pleased to offer even more to passengers with reliable, simple and fast charging services. By working closely with SMEs like ChargeBox, Heathrow drives innovation across the airport to enhance passenger experience and help us meet our service goals.

Ian Hobson, CEO and Founder of ChargeBox, echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of seamless digital support:

I believe airports should be places where technology quietly supports every journey. Charging is a small detail, but without it, the digital travel experience can break down. Our work with Heathrow shows that when you make something as simple as powering your phone effortless, you can remove a layer of stress for passengers. We’re building charging networks that airports can rely on for decades, and we’re excited to bring the same approach to new partners like Dublin and Frankfurt.

Looking Ahead

As Heathrow continues to position itself as a leader in global aviation, investments like the ChargeBox rollout illustrate the airport’s focus on meeting the needs of modern travellers. With smartphones now central to nearly every stage of the journey — from check-in and security to boarding and in-flight entertainment, ensuring passengers have access to dependable power is no longer optional.

The early success of the deployment also points towards wider adoption across the aviation industry. As more airports recognise the link between digital reliability and customer satisfaction, scalable solutions like ChargeBox’s FASTPodiums are likely to become standard. For passengers, this means greater consistency in the travel experience, no matter which hub they pass through.

In a world where digital confidence is increasingly tied to battery percentage, Heathrow’s commitment to solving one of travel’s smallest yet most significant challenges marks a noteworthy advancement. By addressing the simple act of charging, the airport is paving the way for smoother, more connected journeys for millions of passengers every year.
