Apple Unveils iPhone Duo, Its First-Ever Foldable Phone, in Biggest iPhone Redesign Since 2007

Apple finally entered the foldable phone market yesterday, unveiling the iPhone Duo at its “Surprise and Shine” event in Cupertino, California. The book-style foldable marks the most significant change to the iPhone’s form factor since the original device launched in 2007, and it was also the first product keynote led by Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, who officially took over from Tim Cook on September 1.

A New Category for Apple, Nearly Seven Years After Rivals

The iPhone Duo enters a foldable phone market that Samsung has dominated since 2019. Presenting the device himself, Ternus took a pointed swipe at existing foldables, saying that other manufacturers had built devices that felt like two phones awkwardly stuck together. He described the Duo instead as offering a larger display that feels as natural and intuitive as an iPad.

That comparison lines up with the device Apple detailed on its official product page. The iPhone Duo opens like a book to reveal a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR inner display, which Apple says is 50 percent larger than the screen on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, making it the largest display ever fitted to an iPhone. When closed, a 5.4-inch outer display, covering more than 90 percent of the screen area found on the standard iPhone 18 Pro, allows the Duo to function as a compact, pocketable phone in its own right.

Design and Durability

According to Apple, the Duo is the thinnest iPhone the company has ever made when unfolded. It’s built with a Grade 5 titanium frame and hinge cover, paired with Ceramic Shield on both the front and back and a scratch-resistant coating on the inner display. The device is also IP68 rated for water and dust resistance. Apple says the inner display uses a custom nano-texture finish designed to cut down on glare, along with ten ultra-thin display layers and optically clear adhesives intended to minimize creasing at the fold, a persistent complaint about rival foldables.

The phone will be available in two finishes, Star White and Night Sky, and ships without a physical SIM tray, relying entirely on eSIM technology worldwide.

Camera System and Software Tricks

The Duo features a 48MP Dual Fusion rear camera system, pairing a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide lens, alongside a 12MP Center Stage front camera and an under-display FaceTime camera built into the inner screen. Apple also introduced several software features unique to the Duo’s dual-screen design, including Duo Preview, which lets a photo’s subject see a live preview on the outer display, Smart Take, which automatically captures a photo once everyone is ready, and Kid Cue, which uses animations on the outer screen to help draw children’s attention to the camera. A new Duo FaceTime feature also allows nearby friends to join a call using the outer display, without needing to crowd around a single screen.

Performance, Battery and Chip

Powering the Duo is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, featuring a dual 16-core Neural Engine built specifically to handle demanding on-device AI tasks, alongside a vapor chamber cooling system designed for sustained performance during gaming or intensive workloads. Apple pairs the chip with what it describes as an iPhone-first dual-battery system, delivering up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display, or up to 44 hours when using the smaller outer display. The device also supports fast wired charging, reaching 50 percent battery in around 20 minutes.

Connectivity features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Apple’s own C2 modem, which the company says was built specifically to power the demands of the foldable design efficiently.

Pricing and Release Date

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, positioning it as Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet, though notably below some of the $2,500-plus estimates that had circulated ahead of the event. Pre-orders open October 16 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time, with the device arriving in stores on October 23.

Alongside the Duo, Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, both of which saw a $100 price increase over last year’s models, now starting at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively. New Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 models were also announced, alongside an updated set of AirPods.

How the Market Reacted

Despite the historic nature of the announcement, Wall Street’s response was muted. Apple shares slipped roughly 1.9 percent in afternoon trading following the keynote, with much of the foldable’s core details having already leaked in the weeks prior. Analysts were more divided on its long-term significance. Gene Munster of Deepwater Asset Management predicted the Duo could account for as much as 10 percent of Apple’s total iPhone revenue next year, while industry analyst Paolo Pescatore noted that the steep price increases across the standard iPhone 18 lineup may actually narrow the gap for customers considering the leap to a foldable altogether.

Reaction elsewhere was more lighthearted. The Duo’s name quickly became a talking point online, with language-learning app Duolingo poking fun at the naming overlap in a viral social media post, joking that the device offered extra screen space for language lessons.

A New Era, Literally

Beyond the hardware itself, the event carried symbolic weight as Ternus’s first major public moment as CEO. Apple also used the keynote to introduce a new leasing option for customers following this year’s price increases, giving buyers another way to spread the cost of its now-pricier lineup, foldable included.

Whether the iPhone Duo can carve out meaningful share in a foldable market still led by Samsung remains to be seen, but for the first time in almost two decades, Apple has given the iPhone an entirely new shape.
